Enkakenya Camp · The Starbed

Sleep above
the entire world.

Elevated on timber stilts above the riverine forest canopy.
The Mara wakes you first. Nothing else comes close.

The Sacred Space
"There is no ceiling.
There is no room.
There is only the Mara."

The Starbed is not a suite with a view. It is an entirely different way of spending the night in Africa — elevated above the forest, open to the full breadth of the sky, with the Southern Cross visible from the pillow and the Olare Orok audible below. It is the only place at Enkakenya — and one of the few places on the continent — where the Mara wakes you before anything else does.

The Structure

Built from
the forest itself.

The Starbed platform rises on timber stilts above the riverine forest that lines the Olare Orok. The structure is deliberately raw — hewn timber, canvas, driftwood — because the point is not to shelter you from the wild. The point is to place you inside it, at height, with nothing between you and the sky.

Below the sleeping platform, a full shelter suite sits ready for the rare night when the rains come in. The bathroom, the sitting area, the emergency refuge — all beneath your feet, invisible from the bed above.

The Orientation

Faces east.
On purpose.

Every positioning decision on the Starbed was deliberate. The platform faces east so that the first light of the Mara — that pale copper band that appears above the savannah before the sun itself — arrives at the pillow before it touches anything else.

"Enkakenya" means dawn in the Maa language of the Maasai. The Starbed is where that etymology becomes literal. You do not wake up here and go to see the sunrise. You are inside the sunrise, looking out from above the canopy as it begins.

The Night Sky

More stars than
you knew existed.

The Maasai Mara sits far enough from Nairobi's light pollution that on a clear night — and most nights here are clear — the Milky Way is not a suggestion. It is a structure. The Southern Cross, visible from the pillow. Orion hanging over the savannah. Shooting stars that make you reach for your companion's arm.

Below, the Olare Orok moves in the dark. Hippos surface and submerge. Somewhere in the treeline, a bush baby calls. The sounds of Africa, unfiltered, from above the canopy. This is the night the Starbed was built for.

For the honeymooner. The romantic. The insomniac who wants company.
"You do not count stars
from the Starbed.
You lose count."

This is Enkakenya's most requested space. It is preferred for honeymooners — couples who want their Africa intimate, private, and unrepeatable. It is also for the solo traveller who wants one night of something they will spend the rest of their life trying to describe.

What to expect

The Starbed in detail.

The Platform
Elevated on timber stilts

The sleeping platform rises above the riverine forest canopy on rough-hewn timber stilts. The bed is a driftwood four-poster with linen that moves in the night breeze.

The Shelter Suite
Below the platform

A complete suite sits beneath the Starbed — bathroom, sitting area, and beds for when the rains arrive. Fully furnished, never needed on most stays.

The Privacy
Completely secluded

The Starbed sits apart from the main camp. Your butler knows when to appear and when to disappear. This is a space for two — or for one who needs the world to themselves.

The Deck
Driftwood & open air

The deck extends outward from the sleeping platform — a driftwood table, two chairs, a lantern. The place where morning tea becomes a meditation on the Mara plains.

The Security
Maasai guards, all night

Our Maasai staff patrol the camp throughout the night. You are above the ground, well separated from the river, and watched over. The sounds you hear are natural. You are safe.

Getting There
A short walk from camp

The Starbed is a brief, guided walk from the main Enkakenya camp through the riverine forest. At night, your butler escorts you with a lantern. There is no road.
